Major Update & Steam Demo Release

I know it's been almost 3 months since the last update, but with all the recent love the game has received I felt had to take this project more seriously and give it the level of polish that it deserved. This is why I'm happy to announce that RogueJack21 has been completely revamped with a new darker theme, new mechanics, and new visuals that aligns with this new vision.

Also, the game now officially has a Steam Page, and there will soon be Steam Demo coming out, so stay tuned!

Theme & Story Revamp:

You play as Jack, once a celebrated high-roller and the shining star of Noir City's mafia-run casinos, who got betrayed when The House rigged a game against him, stripping away his fortune, reputation, and identity. Now, having disappeared into the shadows for years, he returns incognito, determined to take his revenge and expose The House's corrupt empire.

New Mechanics & Systems:

Trinkets:

  • Trinkets replace the previous Joker mechanics. Some grant bonuses that trigger under certain conditions during a battle, while other provide passives that apply for the whole run, letting you customize your playstyle and add strategic depth.
  • Trinkets come in various qualities (common, uncommon, rare) and can be acquired either via the shop, by defeating difficult enemies or through events. There's currently 50+ trinkets to discover, although some are exclusive to Bosses.

Luck Mechanic:

  • The old “shield” mechanic has been replaced by a new system: Luck.
  • Luck is built up primarily through Clubs cards and certain trinkets, capping at 100.
  • Every point of luck increases the chance that your next card draw will perfectly complement your hand to score a blackjack. For instance, with a hand value of 12 and 25 luck, you have a 25% chance everytime you hit to draw the 9 you need. This is called a “lucky draw” which then resets your luck to 0.

Double Down Mechanic:

  • Besides HIT or STAND, you can now to chose to DOUBLE DOWN. You can only double down at the beginning of the turn.
  • After a DOUBLE DOWN, you will draw 1 more card and automatically STAND.
  • If you win the round while in DOUBLE DOWN, cards in your hand will activate as if you had scored a Blackjack. You have a limites amount of DOUBLE DOWN charges per battle, so use this strategically!

Battle Flow Rework:

  • Dealer & Player now take turns when performing actions. If you HIT, then dealer will then either HIT or STAND, and then it will be your turn again. The round ends when both players have STAND, or one has BUST/BLACKJACK.
  • This new battle flow should give more strategy and decision-making depth to the game.

Card Upgrades & Deckbuilding:

Renamed & Redesigned Upgrades:

  • Card upgrades have been renamed to better fit the revamped theme.
  • Fortune Card Upgrade (formerly Metal Card Upgrade): Now grants luck on a winning round.
  • Glitch Upgrade: “Card’s value changes to either 1 or its original value, whichever benefits your hand most, but its suit count is always 1. (Only applicable to number cards.)”
  • Prismatic Upgrade: “Counts as Spades, Hearts, Clubs, and Diamonds (Only applicable to number cards.)”

New Starting & Unlockable Decks:

  • Along with a variety of new decks, you now must select 2 starting suits after choosing your deck. This tailor-made selection lets you create decks that favor different play styles and synergies. You can still of course acquire cards of any suit during your run.

Progression & Map System:

City Map & Districts:

  • A new map system lets you traverse a metropolis city divided into 3 distinct districts, each featuring its own casino.(Note: Only the first district is available at the moment)
  • In each casino, you’ll navigate through multiple branch paths, for a total of 17 diverse encounters until the Boss. Encounters can be Dealers, Elite Dealers, VIPs, and Events.
  • VIPs are a new enemy type that, upon defeat, grant you a VIP pass to the exclusive VIP Lounge, where you can access powerful deck customization options. (Note: currently the VIP Lounge is not accessible)
  • Events introduce mini-games where you can win extra cards, upgrades, trinkets, and chips.

Difficulty Levels & Rewards:

  • There are now 6 different difficulty levels, which unlocks after completing a run in the previous difficulty (demo features the first difficulty only).
  • Defeating an enemy now yields various rewards such as chips, new cards, the opportunity to destroy a card, or even new trinkets.

Shop Overhaul & Enemy Customization:

  • The shop now offers trinkets alongside standard card boosters, upgrade boosters, and upgraded cards.
  • Enemies are more dynamic: They may carry trinkets and come with decks composed of various suits, all randomized each run for a fresh experience.
